We want to make this the best Ultra you have ever done. We can't take credit for the route, this is down to Alfred Wainwright - but he got it right, which is why it is Britain's most popular long distance path.

  • Registration for both the Lakes Traverse and Northern Traverse will be on Saturday morning 12th May 7am to 8am in the Seacote Hotel St Bees
  • There will be a short race briefing for both events at 8.15am in the Seacote Hotel St Bees
  • Race Start for the Northern Traverse is at 9.00am prompt
  • Race Start for the Lakes Traverse is at 9.30am prompt
  • During April / May 2018 we will be running 2 webinars for participants (1hr) which will include a presentation of the route, where you are likely to encounter problems / opportunities (food!). There will also be a chance to ask questions. Note this is only available for those registered to do the event. It is not mandatory but highly recommended.
  • Event maps will be posted two months before the event. There will be not be a route book.

There are railway stations at St Bees (start), Penrith and Whitby - regular public transport from finish of Lakes Traverse (Shap to Penrith) and Northern Traverse (Robin Hoods Bay to Whitby)

Cut offs!

Cut offs are generally a dirty word in ultra running, but we do have some generous cut offs in place. For this event, the cut offs are based on 4km/hr, plus 1hr per 1000m of ascent.

Lakes Traverse - You must have left the feed stations by the following times:

  • Rosthwaite (TBC)
  • Patterdale (TBC)
  • Shap (Sunday 1pm)

Northern Traverse Cut offs - assume stopping for no more than 5 hrs every 24 hours.

  • Patterdale (Sunday 1pm)
  • Kirby Stephen (Monday 11am)
  • Richmond (Tuesday 8am)
  • Lion Inn Blakely Ridge (Wednesday 5.30am)
  • Robin Hoods Bay (Thursday 8am)

Waymarkings

This event is not waymarked, and you should have mountain and map/compass skills. We don't object to the use of GPS units as back up. GPS must not be your sole means of navigation for this event.

Weather

This route takes in the high fells of the Lake District, and remote (yet high) paths and tracks in the Dales - for Open Adventure to cancel or to change the route it would have to be as a result of significant weather that would put those who have prepared and wearing the right clothing at significant risk.

Runners need to have the appropriate skills and kit for safe travel on foot through the fells in inclement conditions. You have plenty of time to hone your skills!

Please note, if extremely high winds are forecast we may invoke an alternative route and in this event no refund will be given.

ITRA Points

The Northern Traverse has been awarded 6 ITRA endurance points.
The Lakes Traverse has been awarded 4 ITRA endurance points.

Both events have been registered with the UTMB

In the event they are awarded we will submit the results within 10 days of the event. Please note that this event (and any other ITRA sanctioned event) could have the points changed or revoked if the route changes e.g. due to weather. It is very unlikely but it could happen.

Food

You can expect hot food and plenty of it at the key checkpoints on the route. There will be no rationing of this food. However we are not expecting anyone to walk out the door with a loaf of bread! We will contact you prior to the event to check for any special dietary requirements; by that we don't mean a particular brand of pate, rather vegan / gluten intolerance etc.

Food on Lakes Traverse TBC. There will be an additional feed station at Rosthwaite.
