That’s a wrap! Norbert Fasel is our final finisher

The picturesque fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay is usually quite sleepy this time of year, with a few locals and tourists enjoying the beautiful cobbled streets, and the odd Coast to Coast hiker enjoying a pint or ice cream at the end of their journey. However, this week it has come alive with ultra-runners reaching the finish of an epic 300km journey all the way from St Bees on the West Coast of Cumbria.

While the winners, Dave Phillips and Hannah Rickman arrived into the finish early on Monday morning, our final finisher Norbert Fasel came in yesterday at five minutes to 8 o’clock, still a whole 4 hours ahead of the midnight cut off.

His achievement is absolutely phenomenal. While Dave and Hannah were ‘only’ running for 2 days, Norbert has run through 4 nights in some of the most challenging conditions in event history, and remained resolute in his determination to make it to the finish. He was greeted into the finish by the entire Event Team who were there to give him a standing ovation.

When he reached the finish line, despite having made a huge journey, rather than collapsing exhausted in a heap, Norbert stopped to thank the team who had helped him on his journey.

He said, “Nothing would have happened without that team. Each and every one of you bringing his part of the puzzle that formed the complete picture. Thank you for every toast, for every hot soup, for building a tent in the storm, for quickly delivering the bags, for medical advice, for the good words of encouragement and smiles. Thank you very much – you are a brilliant team.”

We asked him about his highlights. He said, “My favourite part of the journey was the Lake District. And also getting along the coast here. It was very very muddy and slippery, but then you know you are close to it. You just have to go one or two or three or four or five more cliffs and then this beautiful village.”

All our incredible participants are now into the finish and enjoying some well-deserved rest and relaxation. It’s been a tough week, but every one, whether they came at the front of the field, were near the back, or had to retire, should be immensely proud of themselves.
